Motor Oil Weights for Turbo-Diesels
he most common turbo-diesel weight is our 15W-40 Signature Series diesel motor oil. Our entire line of Signature Series motor oils offers diesel motors six times the wear protection and outstanding extreme-pressure protection when compared to other diesel motor oils on the market. We also carry other viscosities that may be better for your specific engine, including 5W-40, 0W-40, 5W-30, and 10W-30, along with our Heavy-Duty and Commercial Grade lines.
Choosing the right weight matters more with a turbo-diesel than most engines realize, since these engines run higher compression and higher operating temperatures than a standard gas engine, and the turbo itself adds another layer of heat and mechanical stress the oil has to handle. In Ohio's colder months, a lighter viscosity like 5W-40 or 0W-40 flows faster on a cold start, which matters a lot for a diesel, since diesel engines are already harder to start in freezing temperatures than gas engines. In hot weather or under heavy towing load, a heavier weight like 15W-40 holds film strength better under sustained stress. If you're running a newer diesel with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) or selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, make sure your oil is rated low-SAPS (low sulfated ash, phosphorus, and sulfur), since standard diesel oil can clog emissions equipment over time and lead to expensive repairs.
Lubricants & Protectants for Turbo-Diesels

This includes our Diesel 4-in-1 Fuel Additive, Diesel Injector Clean Fuel Additive and Diesel Injector Clean + Cetane Boost Fuel Additive, among other options in our line of diesel fuel additives. In addition to additives, we also carry everything from automatic transmission fluid to manual transmission fluid, gear oil and even power steering fluid to help keep your turbo-diesel engine system running happy and healthy.
Diesel fuel additives solve real problems that gas engines don't face. Diesel fuel injectors run at extremely high pressure, and even small amounts of buildup on the injector tip can throw off spray pattern, leading to rough idle, lost power, and worse fuel economy. Our Injector Clean additive is built to reverse that buildup. Cetane boost matters too, since higher cetane fuel ignites more easily and burns more completely, which translates to smoother starts, less knock, and less unburned fuel left behind. And if you're in Ohio through the winter, fuel gelling is a real risk: diesel fuel contains paraffin wax that can thicken and clog fuel lines and filters in freezing temperatures. Our Diesel 4-in-1 also addresses cold-flow protection, which is worth having on hand before the first hard freeze, not after your truck won't start on a cold morning.
Filters for Turbo-Diesels
Filters are one of our focuses, and we have several filters designed to improve your turbo-diesel truck's engine and cabin. This includes our AMSOIL oil filters, which provide 99 percent filtering efficiency at 20 microns and help extend service life on your heavy-duty vehicle. We also carry air filters and cabin filters from Wix, Donaldson and Mann. Bypass filtration is worth a closer look if you put serious miles on your diesel truck. Standard oil filters typically capture particles down to about 20 microns, but a bypass filter system captures particles down to 1 to 2 microns, catching the fine soot and metal shavings a standard filter simply can't. Diesel engines generate more soot than gas engines by nature of how they combust fuel, which makes that extra layer of filtration especially valuable for extending both oil life and engine life on a diesel specifically.

Why do turbo-diesels need specialized motor oils, lubricants and protectants?
Turbo-diesel engines require specialized motor oils, protectants and lubricants as they operate under higher heat and pressure than other motors on the market. Additionally, these engines will have higher soot contamination, which requires a higher cleaning and detergent component within the motor oil.
What is the best way to find out what motor oil weight is right for my truck?
The best way to determine the motor oil weight you need for your turbo-diesel truck is to check your owner's manual. What is the difference between commercial-grade and regular turbo-diesel motor oil?
The main differences between commercial-grade and standard turbo diesel motor oil are the additive packages and viscosity grades. Commercial-grade oil will need to withstand higher loads, lower RPMs, and higher operating temperatures than standard truck or SUV oil.
What viscosity motor oil is best for a turbo-diesel truck?
15W-40 is the most common and versatile choice for turbo-diesel trucks, offering strong protection across a wide range of operating temperatures. Does my diesel oil need to be low-SAPS if I have a DPF or SCR system?
Yes. Modern diesel emissions systems are sensitive to ash buildup from standard oil additives. Using a low-SAPS (low sulfated ash, phosphorus, and sulfur) rated oil helps protect your DPF and SCR system from premature clogging and costly repairs. Why do diesel engines need fuel additives more than gas engines?
Diesel injectors operate at much higher pressure than gasoline injectors, and even small deposits can disrupt spray pattern and hurt performance. Diesel fuel is also more prone to gelling in cold weather due to its paraffin content. Fuel additives like our Injector Clean and Diesel 4-in-1 address both of these issues directly, something gas engines generally don't need to worry about in the same way.
What is bypass filtration, and does my diesel truck need it?
Bypass filtration adds a secondary, finer filter alongside your standard oil filter, capturing particles down to 1 to 2 microns compared to the 20 microns a standard filter catches. Since diesel engines generate more soot than gas engines, bypass filtration can meaningfully extend oil life and engine life for a diesel that sees heavy miles or towing.
How often should I change the oil in a turbo-diesel truck?
This depends on your specific engine, driving conditions, and towing load, but diesel engines generally tolerate longer intervals than gas engines when running a full synthetic like our Signature Series.
