What Does Antifreeze & Coolant Do in Your Vehicle?
Antifreeze and coolants are the key to regulating your engine’s temperature during day-to-day operations. The fluid circulates through the engine and dissipates the heat to protect your engine’s components from damage. Just like a home HVAC system, your cooling system’s job is to regulate the temperature of your engine. This means not only that it protects against overheating, but also that it prevents the water in the cooling system from freezing and cracking the engine block, hoses, and other components in sub-zero temperatures. Additionally, most coolant and antifreeze blends will include additives that prevent rust corrosion and scale buildup.
When you think of your cooling system, antifreeze and coolant are often used interchangeably and they are directly related. Antifreeze is a concentrated chemical formulation made from ethylene or propylene glycol. Coolant is a mixture of antifreeze and water, typically at a 50/50 mix. Depending on your specific engine and cooling system, your vehicle may need either diluted antifreeze to a specific percentage or pre-mixed 50/50 coolant.

How often do you need to test your antifreeze?
You should check your coolant levels every three to six months, ideally in the Fall and Spring. You can do a quick weekly check of your reservoir for leaks, but a more thorough test using our antifreeze testing strips should be done every six months to check freeze and boil protection, as well as acidity. If you notice cloudy antifreeze or your coolant is too acidic, you may want to consider a coolant drain-and-fill service.
Can you use powersports antifreeze in a snowmobile?
Yes, you can use our powersports antifreeze in a snowmobile. Our powersports formulation is designed to meet or exceed the cooling requirements of Arctic Cat, Polaris, Yamaha, and Ski-Doo snow machines.
Do you need to mix your antifreezes with any water or other liquids?
In almost all cases, you will need to mix concentrated antifreeze with diluted water in a 50/50 blend. However, depending on your specific engine, you may have a different blend percentage. If you were to use pure antifreeze in your engine, you could cause overheating, as it reduces heat transfer by around 35% compared to our coolant mixes.
Why do freezing and boiling points matter with coolants?
These points matter when it comes to coolants and your engine's health. A lower freezing point will prevent ice from forming on the engine block, which can lead to cracking or other issues. While a higher boiling point will prevent the engine from overheating or the development of steam within the engine block. Ideally, you are looking for a very high boiling point and a very low freezing point to provide the best protection for your engine.
How often should I change my coolants?
This will depend on the specific blend you are using. For most non-Amsoil brands, you should replace your coolant every 30,000 to 50,000 miles, or sooner if you notice discoloration. For Amsoil blends, you can enjoy extended intervals depending on the specific blend. For instance, our propylene glycol blend provides 150,000 miles for passenger cars and light trucks up to 1,000,000 miles.
