What makes AMSOIL's SAE 30 Motor Oil Different?
What makes SAE30 oil different
SAE 30 is a specialized engine oil that should only be used during the first 500-1000 miles of engine break-in. To help ensure there is no damage during the process, our formulation contains high levels of zinc and phosphorus to protect flat-tappet camshafts, lifters, and rockers during this initial high-wear period. For the break-in itself, our SAE 30 blend has a low detergent level and no friction modifiers to ensure rapid ring seating and proper wear-in across all your components.
Which types of engines use SAE 30 motor oil?
Almost any engine can use SAE 30 synthetic motor oil for break-in. It can be used for new or rebuilt gas and diesel engines, as well as high-performance racing engines and small-engine equipment. You never want to use it for long, as this specific blend lacks many of the protective additives to keep your engine healthy and happy over 1,000 miles.
What is the ideal use case for SAE30 motor oil?
The ideal use case for this engine oil is for those with a brand-new or recently rebuilt engine who want to seat the piston rings and ensure proper wear-in. This synthetic motor oil should not be used for everyday driving, racing, or any other use, and should be changed within the first 500 to 1000 miles.

Frequently Asked Questions
No Dumb Questions, Just Dry Dipsticks
What is break-in oil?
Break-in oil is a specifically designed engine oil that is used during the initial hours of a new engine or a rebuilt engine’s life to help piston rings and cylinder walls seat and seal properly. This engine oil is designed to promote controlled wear, allowing the piston rings to seat perfectly on the cylinder walls to maximize engine power. Generally, break-in oil contains high levels of anti-wear additives to protect camshafts and lifters during the high-stress break-in phase.
Can you use break-in oil as your everyday motor oil?
No, you should never use break-in oil as an everyday oil, as this specialty oil lacks the additives that protect the engine over the long term. For instance, break-in oil typically does not contain detergents to prevent sludge buildup and dirt accumulation, as it is designed to run only 500-1000 miles. Instead, if you are looking for an everyday motor oil, Amsoil’s Signature Series Motor Oil is a better option for your vehicle.
Why do you want to seat piston rings quickly?
Seating a piston ring quickly is a good idea in a new or rebuilt engine, as rapid seating helps prevent glazing of the cylinder walls and blow-by. When properly seated, piston rings allow maximum compression and power, as combustion pressure stays in the chamber, which in turn forces the piston down, giving you a better-performing engine over the long run.
