What is an Oil Filter Wrench?
An oil filter wrench is a specialized tool used to remove oil filters from cars, trucks, and SUVs that are screwed on too tightly or are slippery from an oil spill. Typically, oil filters should be hand-tightened and come off easily, but in some cases, you may need help releasing them during an oil change. These wrenches come in four types. The band wrench has a metal band or strap that loops around the filter and, when tightened, grips and removes it. The end-cap wrench is a cup-shaped socket that fits like a glove on an oil filter and can be connected to a standard ratchet to turn it. A plier wrench, which uses curved jaws to clamp the filter. Finally, a claw wrench, which is a 3-jaw wrench that can lock onto the filter's body.
What Sizes does AMSOIL Offer?

Can You Use These Oil Filter Wrenches on Any Brand of Filter?
Yes, you can use our oil filter wrenches with any brand of filter, including OEM filters. The only stipulation is that if you are using an end-cap wrench, you will need to select the appropriate size so the wrench can do its job. If you choose incorrectly, the end-cap wrench will not be able to do its job as it will be too loose, or unable to get around the filter to start with.

What is the best type of oil wrench to use?
For those looking for the cleanest oil wrench to use, an end-cap wrench is the best bet, as it won't damage the filter while still providing the leverage to unscrew a tight or stuck oil filter. Claw, band and plier oil wrenches do an okay job, but can destroy the oil filter when trying to remove it, which can spill oil over the floor, you and the car. With the ratchet attachment on the end-cap wrench, almost any machine-turned oil filter can be removed without breaking a sweat.
What can you connect to the end-cap wrench?
We recommend using a manual hand ratchet or a breaker bar to the square drive end of the end-cap wrench. These hand tools will let you feel the pressure you are applying to the filter, which can help prevent breaks, splits, or other issues in the thin metal that makes up the filter.
Can I use a power drill or impact wrench with my end-cap wrench?
Technically, yes, you can, but we would warn you not to use power tools or machines with an oil filter wrench. The reason is that these machines will apply too much torque and easily crack the wrench or even crush the thin metal surrounding the oil filter. If you are having a tough time, a hand ratchet or breaker bar is a better idea, as it lets you gauge the pressure you need to apply without breaking the filter.
Should you tighten by hand or by wrench?
Now, this is going to be an answer that gets a lot of mechanics talking. The best practice we follow here at Amsoil is to tighten your new oil filter by hand and spin it until the rubber seal, which has been lubricated with oil, touches the engine mount. Once it is touching, you then use the end-cap wrench to complete an extra ¾ turn, and you are done. Some mechanics will swear by hand-tightening only, but we find that in modern cars it is best to use a three-quarter turn to get the seal right without risking the rubber gasket.
What is the standard-sized oil filter wrench?
There is no standard-sized oil filter wrench, as each brand and model can be a little different. However, the most common sizes are the 64 mm, 74 mm, 76 mm and 94 mm. Each of these end-cap wrenches comes with a 3/8-inch square drive that connects to your ratchet or torque wrench.
