What is the difference between NLGI #1 and NLGI #2?
The difference between NLGI #1 and NLGI #2 lies in the grease’s viscosity and pumpability. NLGI #1 is a paste-like grease preferred at lower temperatures and for use in centralized lubrication systems, as it has better pumpability and flows more easily, reducing friction and drag. In comparison, NLGI #2 is the normal or medium grease and is comparable in thickness to peanut butter. This kind of grease is used in general-purpose applications, including wheel bearings and automotive chassis, because it can handle high temperatures.
Can you use multi-purpose instead of other options?
In general, it is not best to use multi-purpose grease in automotive settings, as it is not designed to handle the high-heat and high-load demands of wheel bearings. Automotive-specific grease will include high-temperature dropping points and extreme-pressure additives to better protect and lubricate these crucial components.
When should you use off-road grease instead of water-resistant grease?
In general, off-road grease is used in heavy-duty applications in contaminated environments, such as mud, dirt, and sand. This kind of grease focuses on structural adhesion and wear protection.
