There are a few differences between synthetic racing oil and conventional motor oil that set this blend apart. As a synthetic racing oil manufacturer we use a high concentration of additives like ZDDP to limit wear on components, and a blend of oils designed to handle the intense heat, high RPMs, and high-pressure loads that come with racing. Can you run racing motor oil for a regular consumer vehicle?
Technically, you could run synthetic racing oil in a regular consumer vehicle, but it is strongly discouraged. Racing oil is not designed for long-term use in standard engines and prioritizes protection and performance while sacrificing fuel efficiency. Unless you are running a custom engine set-up and racing on the weekends, it is best to keep racing motor oil to the pros.
How does break-in oil work?
Break-in oil is designed to help the piston ring seat properly in the engine after a change. If you can get the piston ring to sit properly, you can achieve maximum compression and reduce lost horsepower from blow-by. Teams will use this synthetic oil after engine or piston replacements. In general, everyday vehicles do not need to invest in or use break-in oil.
Is this blend different from what the professional racing teams use?
No, Amsoil uses the same blend that we sell to our consumers for our racing teams. Our Dominator line is used by professional racers across the country, including our corporately sponsored drivers. So, if you want to use the same synthetic racing oil that Scott Birdsall and Kyle Chaney use, then you'd better use Amsoil Dominator for your next race.
