What is Hydraulic Oil?
Hydraulic oil is used in braking systems, steering and heavy equipment to transfer power within hydraulic machinery. This specialized oil serves as a medium for transmitting energy within these systems and forms a protective coating that reduces friction and minimizes wear on components. In general, hydraulic oil will either be a mineral oil base for general-purpose hydraulic systems or a synthetic blend designed to handle extreme pressures and high temperatures common in heavy machinery or commercial applications.
What is Transmission Oil?
Transmission oil is a specialized lubricant used in transmission gears, bearings, and seals to better protect and lubricate these crucial components. Used in both automatic and manual transmissions, transmission oil reduces friction between metal parts to prevent failures or issues caused by metal-to-metal wear. In addition, this fluid dissipates heat generated by the engine and normally contains detergents that help prevent varnish and sludge build-up. There are a few types of transmission oil, and using the right one for your specific transmission is important to help prevent potential damage.
Why do tractors have their own hydraulic & transmission oil?
Tractors often use a specialized universal tractor fluid that lubricates the gearbox, operates the high-pressure hydraulics on board, and protects the wet brakes all at the same time. This universal traffic fluid typically includes heavy-duty protection from special additives that guard against wear, oxidation, and corrosion, all of which are common in farm vehicles. As well, the fluid needs to be versatile; it must also manage heat, prevent foaming, and maintain viscosity to allow your tractor to run for hours on end during peak harvest and planting seasons.

Can you use biodegradable hydraulic oil in any vehicle?
No, you cannot use hydraulic oil in any vehicle, but you can use it in most hydraulic systems. You will need to consider the base oil you are using in your machine, the operating temperatures you will be running at, and the seal materials you have. What is the difference between ISO 22, 32, 46 and 68?
In hydraulic oils, the higher the number, the higher the viscosity. In general, ISO 22 has very low viscosity and is normally used in low-temperature applications and in airline systems. ISO 32 is ideal for cold climates and for machines that use high-speed pumps or that require fast-flowing hydraulic oil. ISO 46 is the most versatile hydraulic oil viscosity and is used in temperate and warm conditions for industrial, agricultural, and construction equipment. Finally, ISO 68 is used in heavy machinery and high-pressure, high-temperature systems because it can withstand pressure and heat due to its high viscosity.
How often should I change my hydraulic fluid?
The specific interval will vary from machine to machine. However, in general, you should change the hydraulic oil in your machine every 1,000 to 5,000 hours of operation, or annually if you are not running it around the clock. This interval will vary depending on the make, model, and type of machine you are running. For instance, a skid steer normally will change its hydraulic oil every 1,000 hours, while a mobile crane may be closer to 5,000 hours before a change is needed.
