What is a Fuel Filter?
A fuel filter is the first line of defence against dirt, rust, sediment and water in your fuel tank from reaching the engine. The filter acts as a barrier between your fuel tank and your precision engine parts, such as fuel injectors and fuel pumps, which are prone to blockages and gunk buildup. Fuel filters come in three different varieties. In-line filters are located along the fuel line and provide filtration between the gas tank and the engine. In-tank filters are located in the fuel tank itself and typically consist of a pre-filter sock attached to the fuel pump. Finally, water separators in diesel engines are designed to filter water that can build up in your fuel and protect the fuel injection pump.

How often should a fuel filter be replaced?
If you have a classic car or a vehicle that requires a fuel filter replacement, replace it every 1 to 2 years or between 10,000 and 25,000 miles. However, many modern cars, trucks, and SUVs come with lifetime filters built into the fuel tank that do not require replacement unless there is a major issue with the fuel tank. Your owner’s manual will let you know what type you have, or you can chat with an Amsoil technician who would be happy to help you out and find out if you need a replacement fuel filter.
What are the signs of a clogged fuel filter?
There are a few signs that you might be dealing with a clogged or bad fuel filter. The first is that you are experiencing a sudden loss of power when driving up a hill or when hauling larger loads. The second is if you are dealing with engine misfires or rough idling. Finally, if you are dealing with a difficult-to-start engine or if your check engine light is on, the fuel filter could be your issue.
Can a dirty fuel filter damage my engine?
Yes, a dirty fuel filter can certainly damage your engine, as a malfunctioning filter can restrict fuel flow, causing the engine to run too lean and misfire or even overheat. Over time, running lean can cause serious damage to your catalytic converter, fuel pump and fuel injectors.
Are fuel filters different for gasoline and diesel engines?
Yes, the fuel filters in gasoline and diesel engines are different. The main differences are that diesel fuel filters are designed to remove water from the diesel through water separators and drain valves, and will have a higher micron rating to trap the increased particulates that can damage the engine,
Where is the fuel filter located in a vehicle?
The most common location of fuel filters on modern engines is in-line along the fuel line on the frame rail under the passenger or driver side, just ahead of the rear wheels, or in the engine bay near the firewall. Some vehicles also have in-tank fuel filters, typically “lifetime” filters that are part of the main fuel pump module.
