No, a plug-in hybrid and a parallel hybrid engine both require the same type of 100% synthetic motor oil. Naturally, the specific viscosity that you need will depend on the engine, but both types will benefit from a hybrid-specific motor oil when compared to a traditional engine oil. With the increased demands and start-and-stop nature of hybrid engines, hybrid engine oil will better protect your engine from wear and tear and corrosion issues in the long-term.
How do I check the viscosity needed in my hybrid engine?
If you are not sure of your hybrid engine's viscosity, the first thing to do is check the motor itself. In some cases, the viscosity will be on the oil cap. If not, you can check your owner's manual, which should confirm the ideal viscosity for your engine type. If you have misplaced your owner's manual, you can always chat with an Amsoil expert or check your manufacturer's website for a manual. Generally, hybrid engines will take 0W-20 or 0W-15.
