What is a Transmission Filter?
A transmission filter is much like an oil filter in that it removes contaminants from your transmission fluid as it circulates through your transmission. Your transmission filter sits between the transmission pan and the pickup tube that connects it to your oil pump. It works by passing your transmission fluid through a synthetic or felt-paper filter, removing potential contaminants such as dirt, debris, clutch material, and metal shavings from your system. Once your fluid passes through the filter, it can cool the system and lubricate your gears like it is designed to do. Not all vehicles have a transmission filter, but if you have a modern engine or an automatic transmission, you most likely have one that works hard every time you start your engine.
Do I Need to Change Out My Transmission Filter?
This will depend on a few factors. Some modern automatic transmissions have lifetime filters that are not designed to be changed over the life of the transmission itself. These transmissions will still require fluid changes, but not a full filter change. However, there are other automatic transmissions that do require transmission filter changes every 30,000 to 60,000 miles, depending on the specific transmission. Details on your service intervals can always be found in your owner’s manual or by asking an Amsoil technician.

How often should a transmission filter be changed?
Unlike oil filters, transmission filter change intervals depend on the specific engine in your vehicle. For older vehicles, you should expect to change your transmission filter every 30,000 to 60,000 miles or every 2 to 4 years. For newer vehicles, your transmission filter may be a lifetime filter that is not designed to be replaced unless you fully disassemble your transmission. It is best to chat with an Amsoil expert or consult your user manual for specifics about your vehicle’s transmission and if you need to change it out during your transmission fluid change.
What are the signs of a clogged transmission filter?
There are a few telltale signs that you may have a clogged transmission filter in your vehicle. Things such as delayed gear engagement, slipping gears, sluggish gears, and buzzing or whirring noises from your engine are all telltale signs that your transmission filter is malfunctioning and needs to be changed.
Can a dirty transmission filter damage your transmission?
Yes, a damaged, clogged, or dirty transmission filter can seriously damage your transmission. The reason is that a dirty transmission filter can restrict essential fluid flow and pressure within your transmission, which can cause rough shifting, inadequate lubrication, or extreme overheating. A failure to address the issue could lead to irreversible internal component failure within your engine and require a full transmission replacement.
Do both manual and automatic transmissions have a transmission filter?
All automatic transmissions use a filter, but some are lifetime, while others need to be replaced every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. Manual transmissions typically do not have a filter, as they rely on gravity and splash lubrication rather than a pressurized system. Manual transmissions also use magnetic drain plugs to help collect any metal shavings that may gather in the transmission fluid.
Should I replace the transmission fluid and filter at the same time?
In general, yes, you should replace your transmission fluid and filter at the same time. For automatic transmissions that need their filters replaced, you can complete a drain-and-fill service. This service will have you drop the transmission pan, replace the internal filter and pan gasket and replenish the fluid.
