What is a Heavy-Duty Oil Filter?
Heavy-duty oil filters serve the same function as your conventional oil filters but use additional materials to handle the high-pressure environment they operate in. A heavy-duty oil filter will feature thicker metal shells to help prevent the filter media from collapsing, robust internal supports to ensure that pressure and temperature do not affect its performance, and dense filtering media to trap more fine particulates, keeping your engine clear of debris, dirt, and metal shavings. These filters are great for larger vehicles such as semi-trucks, tractors, and other heavy equipment, and can handle everything from towing to the frequent idling common in many heavy industries.
What is a Heavy-Duty Lube Filter?
Heavy-duty lube filters help your heavy-duty engine’s components get the lubrication that they need. These filters are designed for heavy-duty use and feature materials and engineering to handle the high-stress, high-temperature environments common in commercial trucks, industrial machines, and large diesel engines. These filters come with dense synthetic media to capture more dirt, debris and metal shavings than traditional paper filters. The exterior features a metal end cap and rugged housing that protect against rock and vibration damage and prevent leaks during operations.
What Kind of Vehicles use Heavy-Duty Oil & Lube Filters?
There are a ton of vehicle types that use heavy-duty oil and lube filters. These filters are used in everything from 18-wheelers to heavy-duty pickup trucks like the Ford F-Series and Ram 2500/3500, as well as construction and agricultural equipment such as tractors, excavators, and combines. Essentially, if you are running heavy or have long idles, the vehicle could probably use a heavy-duty filter to help your engine perform better and last longer.

Does the micron rating matter?
Yes, when it comes to filters, the micron rating determines how fine a particulate your filter can capture. The lower the micron rating, the finer the filter is. For most heavy-duty filters, use a filter rated at 10-30 microns to protect your engine.
Do these heavy-duty oil filters work with bypass units?
Yes, our heavy-duty oil filters work with commercial bypass units and provide quality filtration in both standard and bypass modes. For those who are not sure what a bypass system is, it takes about 10% of the oil and puts it through a dense filter to remove even more contaminants than your standard heavy-duty filter. Bypass units are common on tractor-trailers and other heavy-duty equipment that is always operating.
How often should I change my heavy-duty filter?
This depends on your specific engine and the type of oil you use in your vehicle. Generally, when you change the oil, you should also replace the oil filter. However, specifically for the filter, you should replace it between 15,000 and 30,000 miles. Any longer, and you can risk a dirty filter, which can affect oil flow into your engine, making you run hotter.
Can I use a conventional oil filter on my heavy-duty truck?
You can use a conventional oil or lube filter on your heavy-duty truck, but you may run into serious issues. Some issues you may encounter include an oil leak from the filter due to pressure pushing through it, a burst filter, or a clog that requires you to replace the filter well before the normal replacement interval. It is always best to chat with an Amsoil representative to see which filter is best for your specific use case.
What are the common types of heavy-duty filters?
There are three common types of heavy-duty oil filters. The first is the most common: a spin-on filter. These filters spin onto the housing and are hand-tightened to keep the seal flush with the pan. Although less popular, you see cartridge filters on some vehicles, especially high-performance or luxury engines, and are housed in a specialized holder near the oil pan. Finally, you have magnetic filters, which use magnets within the filter to remove metal shavings and particulates.
Can I use an aftermarket oil filter?
Yes, in most cases an aftermarket oil filter will perform better than the OEM filter and will provide additional benefits. Most aftermarket filters are designed and tested on the very engine that you are using, and you can always chat with an Amsoil specialist to confirm the benefits of the specific filter and compare and contrast the filters side by side.
