What makes AMSOIL's 0W-16 Motor Oil Different?
0W-16 is the thinnest synthetic motor oil approved for use in automotive engines by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). It is considered an ultra-low-viscosity motor oil and has seen its popularity increase as more engine manufacturers pursue stricter fuel economy and emissions standards. The benefit of this thin motor oil is that it can coat and protect engine parts with tight clearances and in narrow gaps, such as bearings and other moving parts.
What kind of engine uses 0W-16 motor oil?
0W-16 is one of the newer oil viscosities on the market, and is generally used in modern, high-efficiency gasoline and hybrid engines. Two automakers specifically call for this thin motor oil, Toyota and Honda. Toyota’s four-cylinder 2018+ Prius and Camry models both opt for it. For Honda, the Fit 4-cylinder, some 4-cylinder Civics, and their new hybrid engines all use this ultra-low-viscosity motor oil. Other auto manufacturers also use it, specifically Lexus and Nissan, on their direct-injection 4-cylinder engines.
What is the ideal use-case for 0W-16 synthetic motor oil?
0W-16 is so thin that it is not a general-use motor oil for most vehicles. Instead, as it is specifically designed for newer vehicles with high-tech engines or hybrid 4-cylinder engines, only those vehicles should choose it. Now, if you have the option among a few different viscosities, including 0W-16, it is great for fuel efficiency and will give you approximately 1-2% better fuel economy compared to 0W-20. This motor oil is designed for moderate driving conditions, but should be avoided if you are racing or live in an extremely hot climate.
