Can you install a bypass filtration system by yourself?

Yes, installing a new bypass filtration system is pretty straightforward for experienced amateur mechanics. Amsoil systems are bolt-on and require you to install the mounting bracket in the engine bay, splice into the oil pressure source, and route a return line back to the main oil pan, oil cap, or valve cover. However, if you are not as confident working on your oil and engine system, your trusted local mechanic can certainly assist and complete the installation for you.

Why do you need a bypass filtration system?

Although your consumer vehicle does not need a bypass filtration system to operate, it will help better clean and protect your engine. A traditional oil filter will filter particulates between twenty and forty microns. However, a bypass system filters particulates down to 2 microns, allowing the filter to catch metal shavings, soot, and dust from your engine oil.

Will a bypass filtration system drop your engine’s oil pressure?

No, bypass filtration systems are designed to work alongside your existing engine system and use a calibrated metering orifice within the filter mount to draw a small portion of the oil from the main drain pan. For Amsoil systems, only 5 to 10 percent of your oil moves to the secondary filter, which will not drop the system's oil pressure.

Can you extend your oil change intervals with a bypass system?

Yes, you can extend the life of your oil by using a bypass filtration system on a commercial or consumer vehicle. Because bypass filtration systems remove micro-abrasives and soot proven to degrade your oil, you can increase your oil change intervals by up to 40 percent. However, you should complete routine testing to verify that your oil’s chemistry and additive levels are in the green zone. If you notice your levels dropping, you need an oil change.

What types of vehicles can benefit the most from a bypass filtration system?

A few types of vehicles can benefit from installing an aftermarket bypass filtration system. This includes high-mileage commuters who are looking to increase their engine’s longevity, diesel trucks such as those who are running Duramax, Cummins or Powerstroke engines to clean soot that can build up in the engine bay and motor oil, off-road or construction vehicles that operate in high dust and high intensity environments and fleet vehicles who are looking to cut down on down time and increase protection over the engine.

For many, adding a bypass filtration system can help their engine run better for longer. This upgrade can go a long way, whether you are running a heavy-duty diesel engine, a consumer engine, or even a commercial truck or bus. For many consumer vehicles, a bypass filter system is an aftermarket addition that increases the overall filtration rate and provides cleaner oil to your engine. On the commercial side, an aftermarket bypass filtration system can be a massive upgrade over the one you got from the factory.

Amsoil - Form #1

A bypass filter system is all of the components that make up an oil bypass filtration system on your vehicle. This system will include the secondary bypass filter element, which is a high-efficiency filter canister; a filter mount or manifold to house the filter in the engine bay; the pressure supply line, which takes the oil from the engine port to the bypass filter; and the return line, which will take the cleaned oil to the oil pan. These systems are built to last and are straightforward to operate and install.

Adding a bypass filtration system to your commercial vehicle, truck, or bus offers many benefits. These systems are proven to capture particulates, sludge, and soot down to one to two microns. In comparison, a typical motor oil filter captures particles down to twenty microns. In addition to the added filtration, a bypass system can increase your oil's life and extend the time between oil changes. Finally, because the oil stays cleaner and closer to brand-new specs, you'll reduce long-term friction in the engine and help prevent physical damage to small components in the engine bay.
