What is a Crankcase Breather?
A crankcase breather is considered a filter or a ventilation passage that allows gases and pressure to escape from your engine’s crankcase. As the engine works, gases and pressure start to increase in the crankcase, and need to be relieved. A failure to do so can result in some serious damage to your engine, including a blown-out gasket, oil being pushed past seals or a piston ring failure.
How does a Crankcase Breather Work?
Crankcase breathers are a fascinating piece of technology that moves this gas and pressure away from the engine and expels it into the outside environment. The breather handles high-pressure combustion gases mixed with engine oil mist and moisture and vents them out of the lower engine block. Now, in modern engines, this ventilation is the job of the positive crankcase ventilation valve, which routes the gases back to the intake manifold to be re-burned in the combustion chambers. However, older cars and trucks still use a crankcase breather, combined with a crankcase ventilation filter to capture and deposit oil droplets before the air escapes.

What is the best application for a crankcase breather?
There are a few great applications for a crankcase breather, but for a normal modern vehicle, you won't need this part. If you do, you're likely running a custom racing vehicle or street rod that covers the valve on vehicles without a factory-sealed PCV system. These breathers are also great for high-performance cars that need maximum air filtration or for vehicles running standalone oil tanks and race transmissions.
What happens if a crankcase breather gets clogged?
If your crankcase breather gets clogged, a few things will happen. First, pressure will start to build within your engine with nowhere to release. You will then start to notice oil leaks developing on your valve covers, main seals and oil pans. You will also notice blue smoke from the exhaust as the oil starts to burn where it normally never does, and finally, you will start to see engine performance and overall fuel economy drop. Least to say, it is not great and should be fixed by replacing the filter.
How often should a crankcase breather be replaced?
You should look to replace your crankcase breather every 20,000 to 30,000 miles. However, best practice is to check your breather every time you complete a standard oil change and replace it immediately if you notice it is heavily saturated with wet engine oil.
What is the difference between a crankcase breather and a PVC valve.
Crankcase breathers passively vent the gas and pressure from the crankcase during normal operation. If it is not venting, it allows fresh air to come in. In comparison, a PVC valve is a one-way mechanical check valve that does not suck in fresh air; instead, it actively sucks toxic blow-by gases into the engine intake to be burnt off.
Can I wash and reuse a crankcase breather filter?
This depends on the specific brand of crankcase breather filter you are using in your vehicle. For standard paper and basic foam models, you’re probably better off throwing it away, as the filter likely won't hold up to cleaning. However, if you are using a high-end synthetic nanofiber filter, you can gently clean it with low-pressure air. However, if the filter is fully saturated with engine oil, you will need to throw it away and get a new one, as cleaning will not fix the issue.
Can a bad crankcase breather cause a vehicle to burn oil?
Yes, a bad crankcase breather can certainly cause a vehicle to burn oil, as it will stop the normal airflow loop. Once gas and pressure start to push through the system, you'll see oil pushed into the combustion chamber, resulting in the telltale blue smoke.
