What is Transmission Fluid?
Transmission fluid is a specialized lubricant and hydraulic oil designed to operate in your vehicle’s transmission, ensuring smooth operation and proper functioning. The top transmission fluid blends on the market reduce friction between gears, bearings, and other internal components, prevent overheating in the system, and clean internal components with additives and detergents. The best transmission fluid blends will also include anti-wear agents, friction modifiers, and other additives to better protect and clean internal components.
What is Differential Fluid?
Differential fluid is a gear oil that protects gears, bearings, and internal components housed within your differential housing. This thick lubricant is designed to reduce metal-on-metal friction, dissipate heat from the unit, prevent corrosion, and ensure smooth power distribution to all your wheels. If you have a 2-wheel-drive vehicle, you will have a single differential, whereas a 4-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive vehicle will have two differentials, one for each axle.

Automatic Transmission Fluid

How often should you change your transmission fluid?
The intervals for changing your transmission fluid will depend on your transmission. For most automatic transmissions, you should change your transmission fluid every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. For most manual transmissions, you should expect to change your transmission fluid every 30,000 miles to 60,000 miles. For heavy-duty use, including towing or constant stop-and-go driving, you may want to change your transmission fluid closer to 30,000 miles. Your owner’s manual will outline the recommended intervals for your specific transmission.
What is the process to change your transmission fluid yourself?
The process of changing your transmission fluid is very similar to changing your engine oil. You will want to warm up your vehicle and lift it, then find the transmission pan. Some pans have a drain plug; for others, you will need to carefully remove the entire pan. Once drained, you will need to clean the pan and magnet. Next, you will install the new filter and gasket, place the pan back in place, tighten the bolts and drain plug. Then, you will refill the fluid, which will normally be about 3-4 quarts worth of transmission fluid. Finally, you will want to check the fluid level and check for leaks.
What is the difference between an HST and a CVT?
An HST, also called a hydrostatic transmission, uses hydraulic pressure for smooth, variable-speed control. These transmissions are generally used in heavy-duty tractors and zero-turn motors. A CVT, otherwise called a Continuously Variable Transmission, uses a belt and pulleys for high-speed efficiency and acceleration. These transmissions are used in UTVs and consumer vehicles, including several Nissan models.
