Why is OW-20 the standard motor oil for modern engines?
0W-20 has become the standard motor oil for many modern engines because it is designed for the tight tolerances that are the norm in most modern passenger cars, trucks, and SUVs. This specific motor oil viscosity is formulated to meet the strict fuel economy standards in North America and Europe and offers reduced drag, helping you achieve additional miles per gallon compared to other viscosities.
Can you use OW-20 on older cars?
In general, you will not want to use 0W-20 in an older car, as it is much thinner than what older engines are designed to handle. Older engines have looser tolerances and require a thicker oil viscosity to protect the engine and its components from additional wear, leaks, and oil burning. If you are looking for a thinner oil for an older car, consider 5W-30 or 10W-30, depending on the specific engine and brand.
Is 0W-20 always a synthetic motor oil?
Yes, 0W-20 is almost always a synthetic blend, as traditional mineral oil cannot meet the low-viscosity requirements of this thin oil. Instead, to create this oil, oil companies and formulators use a synthetic base stock that is capable of achieving the ultra-low 0W viscosity. Some companies will blend this base stock with conventional oil, but here at Amsoil, we blend our base stock with synthetic motor oils and additives to create our line of amazing 0W-20 products.
