What is a Hydraulic Oil Filter?
A hydraulic filter does the same job as an oil filter in your hydraulic system: it cleans your hydraulic fluid by trapping dirt, wear metals, and debris during operation. If you have a hydraulic system, a filter is an essential part of operations as it will prevent blockages in valves, extend the life of your actuators and pumps and reduce friction throughout the machine. There are three types of filters, and depending on the location, each will have a specific job. Return filters are located on the hydraulic return line and capture any particulates or metal shavings generated by the normal operation of the motors and cylinders. Pressure filters are located immediately after the hydraulic pump and will catch system-generated contaminants before they reach essential components such as the servo valves. Finally, suction filters are located inside your hydraulic reservoir and will block debris before it can damage your pump or other components further down the line.
What Kind of Vehicles Need a Hydraulic Filter?
For most consumer vehicles, a hydraulic filter is not a necessary component. However, for commercial and heavy-duty equipment, hydraulic lubrication is often preferred to protect high-pressure pumps and cylinders. You can find hydraulic filters on commercial trucks, construction equipment, forklifts, utility vehicles and agricultural machinery.

How often should I change a hydraulic filter?
This will depend on the specific engine you are using and the operating environment you are working in. A back-hoe that is working outside is going to need a filter change ahead of a forklift that is working indoors. However, the typical change interval for a hydraulic filter ranges from 500 to 2,000 hours of operation. If you are not sure, you can always check your owner’s manual or chat with an Amsoil representative!
What are the dangers of a clogged hydraulic filter?
A clogged hydraulic filter can cause significant damage to your equipment and components. This can include increased system pressure as the fluid has to work harder to move through the filter, reduced lubrication and the potential for contaminants to spread throughout the machine. Over time, these issues can lead to part failures in your pumps, valves, cylinders or seals.
How do I choose the right filter for my rig?
The best thing you can do is to check your owner’s manual and see what specifics they recommend for the filter. Some factors to look for include system pressure, fluid type, micron rating, working conditions, and the flow rate you need. An improper filter can reduce the overall protection and potentially limit performance.
Should I always use OEM filters?
OEM filters are great, but many of our clients find that Donaldson P-Series filters outperform OEM filters in wear production and overall system performance. Both OEM and Donaldson filters have the same change intervals, and the biggest difference is the cost savings from choosing a high-performance filter we sell at Amsoil.
Do consumer vehicles have a hydraulic filter?
Typically, no, you will not find a hydraulic filter on a consumer car, truck, or SUV, as you would on a commercial or heavy-duty vehicle. Some older vehicles with traditional hydraulic power steering will have a replaceable, built-in filter or a fine-mesh screen to help keep contaminants out of the components, but modern vehicles with power steering do not have the same need for a reservoir. Your brakes and suspension also use hydraulic pressure but rely on routine flushes rather than a filter to clean out gunk.
