Bypass filters are one of the best ways to ensure your engine oil is thoroughly cleaned during normal operation. On the consumer side, modern passenger vehicles can add these filters as an aftermarket upgrade for extra filtration. This is especially true for larger diesel pickup trucks with Powerstroke, Cummins or Duramax engines that use Amsoil bypass filter kits to better protect their engine and filter out the heavy-duty diesel oil. On the commercial side, heavy-duty semi-trucks, including Class 8 trucks, as well as industrial and agricultural equipment such as heavy generators, buses, and tractors, will generally have larger factory bypass canisters installed to help reduce soot and extend oil change intervals.

What is a Bypass Filter?
Bypass filters are a secondary fluid filtration setup installed in parallel with your main engine oil filter. This secondary filter isn't designed to quickly filter your oil; instead, it routes a small percentage of oil from the pan through an ultra-dense element that traps the smallest particulates such as sludge, soot and microscopic metal shavings. The oil bypass system works a little slower than your normal full-flow oil filter and removes these harmful particulates over time. The filter can extend the life cycle of your main oil filter and ensure your oil is truly clear of harmful particulates after only a couple of cycles through the system.
How does a Bypass Filter work?
A bypass filter works by taking a small amount, normally between five and ten per cent, of pressurized oil from the engine to thoroughly clean it. This amount of oil is not enough to impact operations, but it works its way through the bypass filter at a low speed to filter particulates out of the oil. These filter membranes can catch particulates as small as 2 microns with a 98% efficiency, so the filter will take a while to move the oil through. Once cleaned, the oil flows back to the engine oil pan and joins the rest of your clean oil. As the bypass filter is part of a continuous cycle that includes your current oil filter, your engine’s oil supply will eventually be 100% cleaned through regular use.

How does a bypass filter differ from a full-flow filter?
Bypass filters filter only a small percentage of the overall oil and operate at a slower speed to properly filter the oil through a thick filter. Bypass oil filters can filter down to 2 microns, removing particulates, metal shavings, sludge, and even soot. Compare that to a normal oil filter, which uses larger pores to catch particulates down to 20 microns but still needs to filter at high speed to maintain the oil pressure the engine needs.
Do consumer vehicles come with a bypass filter from the factory?
No, modern consumer vehicles do not have bypass filters installed from the factory. However, many luxury vehicle owners and those with heavy-duty diesel engines choose to add aftermarket bypass filters to better clean their engine oil at the source.
What are the benefits of using a bypass filter?
Bypass filters offer several benefits for your vehicle. This includes reducing engine wear by removing micro-particles that cause wear and tear on tight-clearance areas within the engine. It will also extend the life of your oil and can extend the intervals between changes by twenty to forty per cent. Finally, because your bypass filter filters out soot and sludge, your motor oil can maintain a lower thermal load and dissipate heat around your engine better.
Can I replace my old full-volume filter with a bypass filter?
No, you cannot replace your old full-volume oil filter with a bypass filter. Instead, a bypass filter is an auxiliary system that supports your overall oil filtration system.
Will installing a bypass filter void my warranty?
No, installing an aftermarket bypass filter is perfectly safe and does not void your vehicle’s warranty. Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a dealership or car manufacturer cannot deny a warranty claim because an aftermarket system is installed on the vehicle.
