What is an Air Filter?
An air filter is a component that is added to the engine bay or cabin to provide the vehicle with clean air to breathe. The filter will help prevent dust, air, and debris from entering your vehicle and either damaging your engine or introducing particulates into your car while driving. These filters are generally made of fibrous materials and will look like a mini version of an air filter that you would put in a furnace air handler.
Cabin Filter vs Engine Filter.
Vehicles have two separate air filters, each with a specific job. The cabin air filter traps dust, pollen, mould spores, allergens and exhaust fumes from entering the passenger cabin and is connected to the vehicle's heating and cooling system. The engine air filter allows your engine to breathe clean air and prevents sand, insects, pollen, dirt, and other debris from entering the combustion chamber and damaging it over time.

How often should I replace my car’s air filter?
You should replace your engine air filter every 15,000 to 30,000 miles to keep your engine breathing fresh air. However, if you often drive on dirt or gravel roads, you may want to consider a change at around 10,000 miles. For your cabin filter, replace it every 12 months or between 12,000 and 15,000 miles.
What are the signs that my engine air filter is dirty or clogged?
There are a few signs that might suggest your engine air filter is clogged or dirty and needs to be changed. This includes engine performance issues such as sluggish acceleration, rough idling, and engine misfires, as well as efficiency and emission concerns such as poor gas mileage, exhaust smoke, and even a faint gas or diesel odour.
How can you tell that your filter is dirty?
The best way to check if your filter is dirty is by a visual inspection. Your filter will either be bright white or off-white and should be see-through when put up to a light. If your filter is not see-through, has visible dirt, leaves, or debris, or is no longer white, you will most likely need to change it.
Where is my engine air filter?
Most modern vehicles have the engine air filter located in a white box at the front of the engine. You will need to remove an access lid, then access the filter and remove it for inspection or replacement.
Where is my cabin air filter?
This is a little more difficult, especially depending on the make and model. For most vehicles, the air filter is located directly behind or inside the passenger-side glove box. The filter can be accessed by releasing the retaining tabs and lowering the door. However, there are. Few other spots it could be. This includes the area under the dash in the driver or passenger footwell, under the hood near the windshield on the passenger side, or under the center console.
Can I replace a car air filter myself?
