What makes AMSOIL 5W-50 Synthetic Motor Oil Different?
5W-50 is one of the thickest motor oil weights on the market. With its high viscosity range and shear resistance, it can handle everything from turbochargers to racing engines, including direct-injection engines. With its formulation, it can prevent oil pressure drops at high temperatures and handle engines that run as hot as 250 degrees, making it perfect for high-stress, high-heat operations.
What kind of motors use 5W-50 engine oil?
Generally, the only engines that are going to use this thick of a motor oil are high-performance engines that are being track-driven, towing or racing. For instance, Ford’s 5.4L supercharged engines and GM’s 5.5L LT6 all call for this motor oil weight. While it is also recommended for numerous European high-performance engines, including Porsche, AMG and BMW.
What's the ideal use for 5W-50 motor oil?
As 5W-50 is such a heavy motor oil weight, you should only really use it for specific use cases and in specialized engines. For instance, if you are looking to run a track day or haul something extremely heavy, 5W-50 might be a good choice. However, for everyday driving, most vehicles would not benefit from this high viscosity unless you had a very old engine with over 100,000 miles and were looking for extra protection.

Which UTVs use 5W-50 motor oil?
A few UTV and ATV brands recommend this specific motor oil weight. This includes the Polaris RZR, Ranger, General, and Sportsman, all of which are 4-stroke engines. Besides Polaris engines, you can use Amsoil’s ATV/UTV Motor Oil in Arctic Can, Can-Am, Yamaha, Honda and Kawasaki machines or any other off-road vehicle engine that recommends 5W-50 synthetic motor oil.
What kind of motor oil should I use to protect my Turbocharger?
If you are looking for a motor oil option to use with your Turbocharger at 5W-50 viscosity, you should consider Amsoil’s Signature Series Synthetic Motor Oil. This motor oil is proven to protect turbochargers by up to 72% more than the General Motors Dexos 1 Generation 2 specification requires.
Is 5W-50 a good viscosity for daily driving?
5W-50 is not normally a viscosity that you want to use for daily driving. Because of its high-temperature operation, you will only see racing vehicles, heavy-duty towing vehicles, or those operating in extreme heat using this thick oil. Instead, if you are looking for a daily driving viscosity, you should consider 5W-30 as it balances performance with anti-wear properties and shear stability.
