How Does an Oil Filter Work?
Oil filters are among the most important components of your oil system, cleaning your engine oil while your engine is operating. Most oil filters work by forcing engine oil through a porous medium, normally either paper or a synthetic fibre, using pressure from the oil pump. Once the oil enters the small perimeter holes in the oil filter, it passes over the filtering media, which traps contaminants, before allowing the oil to flow back to the engine through a central hole into the oil pan. These filters will remove dirt, metal, and soot from your oil and help you extend your engine's life when installed properly and regularly changed.
How Does an Air Filter Work?
The vast majority of commercial and residential vehicles will have two sets of air filters on the vehicle. The first is your engine air filter, which will remove dust and dirt from your engine bay. The second is your cabin filter, which removes allergens, dust, and pollen before they can enter the cab or passenger area of your vehicle. These filters work by forcing air through a dense fibrous material, such as pleated paper or foam, and trapping airborne particulates before they enter the engine or passenger area via your heating and cooling systems.
How Does an Fuel Filter Work?
Fuel filters work much like an oil filter and are an essential part of your internal combustion engine system, ensuring that contaminants do not make their way from the pump to your engine. Fuel filters work by forcing fuel through a porous, pleated medium, typically cellulose or a synthetic fibre, and then returning the filtered fuel to the tank. These filters will help trap dirt, water, and rust before they enter your engine and cause issues down the line.
How Does an Coolant Filter Work?
Coolant is such an underappreciated part of your engine, especially in a harsh climate like the one we have in the Great Lakes region. Coolant filters are often set up in a by-pass circuit, which allows a certain percentage of your coolant to be treated and to add additives to prevent corrosion, such as Supplemental Coolant Additives. These paper or synthetic filters will trap sediment, rust, and debris that can otherwise lead to component wear and overheating.

What is the difference between air filters and cabin filters?
There is no difference between your engine air filter and your cabin filter in terms of functionality. Both will use a paper or synthetic filter to capture larger and smaller particles. Generally, engine oil filters can be a little more heavy-duty, given the environment they operate in. Additionally, some clients want HEPA-rated air filters for their cabin, which can capture even the smallest contaminants before they enter the cabin air.
Is a hydraulic oil filter different from an oil filter?
Although both have "oil" in their names, these two filters are not interchangeable. Hydraulic filters are designed to operate in high-pressure systems, typically between 2000 and 5000 PSI, with finer filtration. In comparison, engine oil filters are designed to work in lower-pressure environments and will filter up to 20 microns.
Why would you want a bypass oil filter?
By-pass oil filters serve as a secondary filtration system in most engines and can extend engine life and oil change intervals. These systems generally filter down to 2-5 microns, helping prevent sludge buildup and improve overall oil cooling for your engine.
What is a crankcase breather?
A crankcase breather is a component of your engine’s Positive Crankcase Ventilation system that releases pressure and allows fresh air into the crankcase. The component is there to prevent the buildup of gases that can escape through the piston rings, leading to seal damage, poor engine performance, and oil leaks.
