What is a Gasoline Additive?
Gasoline additives are a mix of chemical compounds that are formulated to enhance your engine’s performance, clean internal components within the fuel system, and extend fuel life. These additives will work by cleaning carbon deposits from the fuel injectors, valves, carburetors and combustion chambers. While also protecting the fuel system from moisture damage, which can lead to corrosion. Additionally, most additive brands have lubricating properties that reduce wear on the upper cylinder components and the fuel pump. Other features that can be included in these additives include fuel-stabilizing properties to prevent fuel breakdown during long storage and an octane boost to improve performance in high-compression engines.
What is a Gasoline Stabilizer?
Gasoline stabilizers are liquid additives that you add to your fuel to protect it during long-term storage, typically for more than 30 days. This additive is designed to be added directly to the fuel tank, and it bonds with your fuel mixture to prevent oxidation. Not only does this additive help stabilize the fuel, but it also helps maintain its combustibility when you need to drive it again. When properly added, this mixture can keep your fuel fresh for up to 12 months in storage.
How do Diesel Additives Differ from Gasoline Additives?
There are a few key differences between gasoline and diesel additives. First and foremost, diesel additives will include lubricants to help protect fuel pumps and injectors from the harsh Ultra-Low Sulphur diesel fuel. Diesel also uses cetane to improve combustion and cold starts, and to reduce noise, while gas additives can include octane boosters to prevent knocking and improve overall performance. Diesel fuel additives also include cold-weather protection and anti-gelling compounds to prevent wax crystallization in the fuel pump, fuel lines, and fuel tank. Additionally, diesels will need to contain two to three times as much dispersant to handle high soot levels and must not contain ash to avoid damage to Diesel Particulate Filters.
