Gear oil is a high-viscosity lubricant used in heavy-duty transmissions, transfer cases, and differentials to protect the sensitive gear sets from damage under heavy loads and normal use. The gear oil acts as a protective layer between the gears, reducing friction, pitting, scuffing, and wear caused by metal-to-metal contact in these machined engines. Most gear oils also contain extreme-pressure additives, such as API GL-4 and GL-5, that handle the sliding friction that occurs with hypoid gears.

V-Twin engines, such as those found on Harley-Davidson motorcycles, require a specialized primary fluid formulated for the chain case. Unlike other bikes and vehicle motors, V-Twins have a separate primary chamber and an associated specialized primary fluid that lubricates it. The primary fluid lubricates the wet clutch, primary chain, and compensator sprocket, protecting the components from high stress and reducing noise and heat on the engine. Plus, most primary fluid blends will deliver optimal clutch performance, increasing power and letting your V-Twin hum like it is fresh off the factory floor.

Can you use severe gear lube on any vehicle?
No, you cannot use Amsoil Severe Gear Lube in any vehicle. However, it is one of the most versatile gear lubes on the market. For the vast majority of automotive differentials and some manual transmissions, this gear lube is a great option. It is engineered for extreme loads and towing and offers premium high-temperature protection. If your vehicle requires API GL-5 or GL-4 specifications, Severe Gear Lube is the right choice, making it the best option for most trucks, SUVs, and high-performance vehicles. However, when making your choice, make sure to choose the right viscosity for your transmission or differential.
How often do you need to add gear lube to your vehicle?
This will depend on your specific vehicle and the intervals that come with it. For most vehicles, you should look to change your gear lube every 30,000 to 60,000 miles for automatic transmissions. While for those with a manual transmission and differentials, you should aim for between 60,000 and 100,000 miles. If you are hauling heavy loads, towing, or frequently driving in harsh, hot conditions, you may want to consider adjusting your intervals to every 20,000 to 50,000 miles.
