For Our Motor Oils


As one of the best motor oil brands on the market, we are proud to provide our clients with access to our data to showcase that we actually test our motor oils in a wide range of scenarios. In-house, we utilize our advanced lab to conduct spot tests on batches and develop new additives and processes, enhancing engine protection and delivering reliable performance when you need it most. We also test our motor oils on the track through our racing teams and on the road with short-term, medium-term and long-term testing with cabs, emergency vehicles and consumer vehicles. In addition to our in-house testing and validation, we also use multiple independent testing agencies to confirm our results and are happy to share those results publicly.

Testing Isn’t Optional—It’s Standard

Motor oils are tested for a variety of reasons, but here at AMSOIL, we believe in ensuring product quality and performance across all of our lubricants. We conduct a range of tests on our motor oils, including standardized tests commonly used across the automotive industry and specialized dyno testing tailored to lab conditions. Whether we are completing a four-ball wear test, volatility or even deposit control, these tests check that our motor oil and additives are doing what they are designed to do when you need it most. 

What We Test For

From Wear to Heat—We Test What Matters Most

Volatility Testing 

As an internal combustion engine is going to get hot, testing for volatility at high temperatures looks to confirm our oil's ability to resist volatility, or oil vaporization. We use the NOACK volatility test for this purpose, allowing us to compare our oils and those of our competitors.

Viscosity Control 

Viscosity is an integral part of any motor oil, as a predictable and stable viscosity will allow the engine to operate at cold and hot temperatures and prevent metal-on-metal contact. We use a few different standardized tests to confirm our viscosity is correct, including the cold crank simulator test and the Sequence IIIFH engine test.

Deposit Control 

There are numerous standardized tests used to assess deposit control on pistons and other engine components. We primarily use the TEOST 33C because it demonstrates our oils' superior deposit prevention capabilities compared to conventional oil. 

Oxidization & Heat Resistance   

Oxidization and heat resistance testing enable us to evaluate the effectiveness of our synthetic oil in preventing sludge formation resulting from heat and oxygen breakdown. This test is called the Thin Film Oxygen Uptake Test. 

Four Ball Wear Test 

The four-ball wear test, otherwise known as the ASTM D4172, is an oil industry standard test that measures the ability of a lubricant to prevent metal-on-metal contact within the engine. In addition to metal-on-metal contact, the test also measures the friction that is present within the engine during the test. The less friction, the better performing the oil is.

  • Can you find the testing results for Amsoil products?

    You can find the testing results for all AMSOIL protectants and lubricants on the AMSOIL website under performance testing. These results include both independent testing and in-house testing in lab conditions and in real-world conditions.  

  • Do you test in all environments?

    Yes, as an advanced lubricant company, we find it best to test in all environments, including extreme heat and extreme cold. Luckily enough, we have testing grounds in North America to test our products in all environments, from the Ohio and Great Lakes area to the far Arctic and the deserts in Arizona.  

  • What kind of vehicle engines are tested?

    We test all makes and models of vehicles to evaluate the effectiveness of our protectants and lubricants. If it is found here in Toledo, Ohio or in the rest of the North American auto market, we have tested AMSOIL products on it.

  • Which independent testers are used?

    We use a variety of independent testers for our motor oils, protectants and fluids, including transmission fluid and power steering fluid. For instance, we have used the Sequence IIIHF Engine Test and Peugeot for their TU3M Wear Test. A complete list of testing partners can be found on the AMSOIL site.
